Shopping For Big Ticket Items
Aside from Real Estate, one of the next largest purchases one makes is a car. There once was a time when shopping for a new or used car was, well, painful. It was hard to tell what the price should be, where to find the most value, who had the best deal. Often, we shopped where our parents shopped.
Today, shopping for a car frequently involves researching using the Internet. But before you jump online, we suggest a couple of these steps: determine your desired vehicle (small or large sedan, cross-over, SUV, van or truck). Next, consider the amount of monthly payments you’ll aim for. Most dealers will ask this, rather than the total amount. Conventional wisdom is to include the insurance cost in your calculation (car payment + insurance = monthly cost).
If you are trading in a vehicle, use tools like kbb.com or Edmunds.com and check the value of your trade-in. Be honest with the condition of your trade-in and look for the dealer trade-in value.
There is a difference between shopping and buying. When you are ready to buy, use an online search engine like Google.com to help the process. Once you have narrowed down your vehicle type and brand, include that in your search criteria, such as “Cadillac SUV.” The more specific you are, the more specific the results will be.
When buying there are several “best” weekends to shop for a car: Memorial Day Weekend, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and President’s Day Weekend. Pick-up a copy of the newspaper and look for dealer’s specials. Head out to the dealerships, test drive and find your next car.
